"Fairy Alley is a treasured part of our neighborhood and part of what makes us unique. It represents our free expression. There is nothing to gain by removing the art, and plenty to lose."

Keep Austin’s Neighborhood Art Alive

Fairy Alley isn’t just a street — it’s a story.
Created by neighbors, adorned by families and kids through the City of Austin, Fairy Alley has been a vibrant symbol of creativity, connection, and local pride for nearly a decade.

Now, a new TxDOT policy threatens to remove community-painted streets across Texas — including Fairy Alley. Officials say these murals don’t “serve a direct traffic control function.” But to us, they serve something far more vital: belonging, joy, and the spirit that makes Austin Austin.

We believe safety and creativity can coexist. The City and TxDOT can work with residents — not against them — to preserve neighborhood art while keeping our streets safe.

Why It Matters

  • Fairy Alley was built through a city-approved program meant to strengthen neighborhoods.

  • There’s no data showing colorful murals cause harm — but there’s plenty showing they bring people together.

  • Losing Fairy Alley means erasing a decade of local art, connection, and creativity.
